Real margin on every product in your Shopping feed

Standard Shopping reports cost against the item id in your feed. Shopify knows what that item cost you. Opteno reads both, so the feed stops being a list of products and becomes a list of contributions.

The feed-level problem

A Shopping feed treats every product as equally worth advertising, because nothing in it describes margin. The bidding then optimises for conversion value, which rewards whatever sells easily — and what sells easily is frequently what is cheapest, which is frequently what earns least.

The result is an account that grows revenue while the bank balance does not move, and a monthly reconciliation that nobody can trace back to a product.

What you get

  • Profit per product, per day

Daily spend from Standard Shopping and Performance Max — the two channels where Google reports against a product offer — joined to the orders that offer produced, with refunds and cost of goods taken off before anything is called profit.

  • POAS against a fixed break-even

Break-even POAS is 1.00×, computed rather than hard-coded, so there is no per-product target to derive or maintain. A row below the line is losing money on every sale, whatever its ROAS looks like.

  • Variant, country and market detail

A feed sells variants, and variants disagree with each other. Open a product row and the same arithmetic is one level down, split by variant, by country and by Shopify market.

  • Price changes with the figures they started from

Change a price from Opteno and it stores the ad spend, revenue, net profit, cost of goods, gross margin, ROAS, POAS, units and exchange rate of the 30 days before. Weeks later you can judge the change against what was actually true when you made it.

What operators usually change first

  • Fill in the cost-per-item on the variants Opteno reports as missing it — nothing works properly until this is done
  • Sort by net profit and read the bottom of the list, not the top
  • Split the products whose break-even ROAS differs most into their own campaign or asset group
  • Take the persistent losers out of Performance Max asset groups, on approval, and watch the attributed spend move
  • Revisit the prices on the products that are close to break-even rather than far below it

None of these is automatic. Opteno prepares them and waits for a person, because a tool that reorganises an ad account by itself is a tool you cannot leave running.
